Inaugural Stephen Lerner, M.D., Lecture scheduled for Dec. 6

The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases will launch a new annual lecture this month thanks to the generosity of a longtime faculty member.

The first of the Dr. Stephen A. Lerner Endowed Lectureship series will feature Gina Suh, M.D., assistant professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., will present “Going Viral: The Role of Phage Therapy for the Treatment of Infectious Diseases” from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Dec. 6.

The lecture, to be given in the Prus Auditorium at Harper Hospital, is open to faculty and students.

Dr. Suh is an Infectious Diseases specialist with expertise in the field of musculoskeletal infectious diseases. Before she was recruited to Mayo Clinic in 2019, Dr. Suh created the Musculoskeletal-ID program at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California in 2012. Dr. Suh also has a special interest in biofilms, bacteriophage therapy, and has publications in journals including Science, Injury, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, and Techniques in Orthopaedics.

The series is named for Stephen Lerner, M.D., professor emeritus of the Division of Infectious Diseases, and is made possible through his generous donation. The lectures will focus on the subject of antimicrobial drug resistance.

Dr. Lerner served as a full-time faculty member from 1986 until his retirement in 2017. He also served as associate dean of Faculty Affairs from 2002 to 2009. He is the founder and chair of the Michigan Antibiotic Resistance Reduction Coalition.

“We are very appreciative of Dr. Lerner’s ongoing commitment to research and education,” said Pranatharthi Chandrasekar, M.D., professor of Internal Medicine and division chief of Infectious Diseases. “His dedication and generosity provide this new lecture series so that students, faculty and researchers can benefit from learning the latest information in the field of infectious diseases and antibiotic drug resistance.”
