Applications for the 2022-24 Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Global and Urban Health Equity Program are now being accepted.

The program, offered by the WSU Global Health Alliance, is a free, two-year post-graduate program designed to strengthen patient care with a dose of cultural humility. GLUE's goal is to provide a greater awareness of cultural and socioeconomic factors, and emphasize the importance of communication skills in medical practice.

GLUE consists of a three-part structure that includes monthly didactic seminars, quarterly advocacy participation and a summative capstone project, all designed to equip health care professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to join the global mission of reducing health inequity at home and abroad.

The longitudinal program involves seminars, group learning, mentoring, and international and local projects. It is designed for medical, public health, nursing, pharmacy and graduate students; and residents, fellows, faculty and allied health care professionals interested in global health. CUGH connects the group with a worldwide network of 145 academic institutions, program materials and funding opportunities.

GLUE was developed to train leaders who set national and international standards of best practice in global and urban health education, service, research, policy and advocacy. Graduates become pioneers who lead transformational and innovative solutions to international and domestic problems like those faced in addressing community infectious disease and global pandemics.

The curriculum, based on the Consortium for Universities in Global Health’s Global Health Education Competencies Tool Kit, includes Global Burden of Disease; Globalization of Health and Health Care; Social and Environmental Determinants of Health; Sociocultural and Political Awareness; Collaboration, Partnering and Communication; Ethics; Program Management; Health Equity and Social Justice; Strategic Analysis; and Capacity Strengthening.

The part-time program is designed to be flexible and provides opportunities to participate in research and service-learning programs locally and abroad; includes lectures and mentorship by a multi-disciplinary team of local experts, including those in medicine, public health, law, engineering and environmental health.

Enrollment is free, but participants must have at least a bachelor’s degree.
