The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Office of Graduate Medical Education held its 11th annual Quality Improvement Research Day online, in collaboration with its primary clinical partner, Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital on May 10 to showcase quality improvement projects conducted by residents in the Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Transitional Year programs at the hospital.
Anne Messman, M.D., associate dean of Graduate Medical Education, and Sheryl Wissman, M.D., chief medical officer at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital, opened the with a welcome address for the more than 60 attendees.
Thirteen resident/faculty teams hosted prerecorded YouTube presentations of their 2021-22 research, with a resident respondent taking questions from judges and attendees. Judges included Camelia Arsene, M.D., Ph.D., M.H.S., director of Undergraduate Medical Education and associate program director for the Transitional Year Program at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital; Jason Booza, Ph.D., assistant dean of Continuous Quality Improvement and Compliance for the School of Medicine and assistant professor of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences; and Jay Liggins, an epidemiologist and infection preventionist in Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital’s Department of Quality Management.
Robert Flora, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H., chief academic officer and vice president for Academic Affairs at McLaren Health, presented the keynote address, “The Here and Now: It’s About Performance Not Quality.” Dr. Flora discussed the increasingly critical role of quality improvement projects in residency training as the cornerstone not just of hospital performance outcomes, but also equity and inclusion measures and health care providers’ ongoing professional development.
At the conclusion of the event, the judges determined the top scorers.
Internal Medicine
First: “Overutilization of Amylase and Lipase Testing in Acute Pancreatitis,” Alaa Taha, with co-authors Vatsal Khanna and Ranim Chamseddin, and faculty mentor Vesna Tegeltija
Second: “Improving the Pneumococcal Vaccination Rates for Qualifying Adults Under the Age of 65,” Saad Chaudhry, with co-authors Padmini Giri, Trishya Reddy, Anoopa Mathew, Shahed Hussain, and faculty mentor Joseph Vercellone
Family Medicine/Transitional Year
First: “Decreasing Rates of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital,” Thomas Hester, with co-authors Monica Hessler-Waning, Thomas Hester, Reem Kashlan, Osama Tariq, Bernadette Schmidt, Trishya Reddy, Jahanavi Ramakrishna, and faculty mentors Tess McCready and Vesna Tegeltija.
Dr. Messman and the Graduate Medical Education staff acknowledged the guidance provided by program leadership, including Sarwan Kumar, M.D., program director; Vesna Tegeltija, M.D., associate program director; Zain Kulairi, M.D., and Joe Vercellone, M.D., clinical faculty; Eleanor King, M.D., program director, and Andrea Milne, M.D./Ph.D., associate program director; Tess McCready, D.O., program director, and Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences faculty member Elizabeth Towner, Ph.D.
