The Wayne State University School of Medicine Office of Undergraduate Medical Education’s Difference Makers award program recognizes students, faculty and staff who go above and beyond to make a positive impact on the learning experience for Warrior M.D. students. The nominees are chosen by students following each 11- and 12-week course block.

For July through September 2021, the top individuals nominated by the Class of 2025 were students Hannah Adams, Crisshy Auguste, Isaac Goldberg, Ann-Cathrin Guertler and Adlai Nelson; Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences

Rodney Braun, Ph.D., who teaches Histology; and staff member Loretta Robichaud, R.N., who serves as the class counselor.

“A family member of mine passed away during the first month of school,” said a Class of 2025 student who nominated Robichaud. “It was an incredibly difficult time for me and Mrs. Robichaud not only allowed me to have time off but made sure I was mentally ready and had the resources necessary to succeed after I came back.”

Additional nominees included faculty members Paul Walker, Ph.D.; Ryan Thummel, Ph.D.; Dennis Goebel, Ph.D.; Sharon Ackerman, Ph.D.; and Bruce Berkowitz, Ph.D.

For July through September 2021, the top individuals nominated by the Class of 2024 were student Zahra Alburkat; staff member Tapinder Singh, the School of Medicine’s Pre-Clerkship Education Coordinator; and Associate Dean for Professional Development and Professor of Pediatrics Beena Sood, M.D.

“I am thrilled to receive this recognition. It is a privilege to be able to work with our dedicated medical students who are thinking out of the box to break down barriers to the success of health professionals and their ability to provide quality care for our communities,” Dr. Sood said.

Additional nominees included medical students Marijo Wohlfert, Samuel Cain, Priscella Holland and Mirna Kaafarani, and staff member Tia Finney.

“Difference Makers not only are successful themselves, they are committed to making other people successful,” said Senthil Kumar Rajasekaran, M.D., senior associate dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and Curricular Affairs. “Difference Makers take ownership. They don’t wait for someone else to get it done. They create and amplify positive energy around them. They are proud of where they belong and take pride in promoting their institutional brand.”
