C.P. Lee Endowed Graduate Student Research Presentation Day features Nobel laureate as keynote speaker

The 25th annual C.P. Lee Endowed Graduate Student Research Presentation Day, scheduled for Jan. 24, will feature a Nobel Prize laureate as keynote speaker.

Gregg Semenza, M.D., PH.D., professor of Genetic Medicine, Biological Chemistry, Oncology, Pediatrics, Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences, and director of the Vascular Program at the Institute for Cell Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will present “Hypoxia-Inducible Factors and Cancer Progression” during the virtual event.

Gregg Semenza, M.D., PH.D.

Dr. Semenza won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. His lab made the paradigm-shifting discovery of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), a transcription factor that controls the expression of thousands of genes in response to changes in oxygen availability in virtually all metazoan species. The finding, for which he received the Nobel, has far-reaching implications for understanding and treating many common diseases, including anemia, ischemic cardiovascular disease, chronic lung diseases and cancer.

The Chuan-Pu Lee, Ph.D. Endowed Graduate Student Research Presentation Day is a student-organized event that showcases graduate student research of Wayne State University. The day aims to highlight the diverse spectrum of research in the various STEM fields at WSU and promote collaboration between researchers.

The event is supported by a generous gift from Dr. Lee, who died in 2016. The endowed funds provide awards and prizes. Dr. Lee retired in 2011 after 36 years as a member of the School of Medicine faculty. She later served as an advisor for the then-Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She was a strong advocate for WSU graduate students, offering pre- and post-doctoral travel awards to help offset the cost of national and international conferences.

Featuring 10 oral presentations and 40 poster rapid-fire presentations, this year’s event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. via Zoom. Register at https://gsrpd9.wixsite.com/gsrpd/event-details/graduate-student-research-presentation-day-1
