Register now for Feb. 1 Sleep Medicine 2021 symposium

The John D. Dingell VAMC Sleep Medicine Section and VA Employee Education System will present Updates in Sleep Medicine 2021, a daylong symposium, Feb. 1.

The live virtual on-demand curriculum will provide up-to-date educational material on core topics and clinical cases in sleep medicine and provide practitioners with the knowledge to update their standards of practice as well as incorporate new diagnostic tools into their daily practice.

The agenda, which runs from 8 a.m.. to 4:30 p.m., includes:

8 to 8:15 a.m.:  Program overview, Abdullahi Ahmed, M.D., staff physician, VAMC Sleep Section, and Susmita Chowdhuri, M.D., M.S., FAASM, WSU professor of Internal Medicine and chief of the Sleep Medicine Section

8:15 to 9 a.m.: “Novel Therapies for Sleep Disordered Breathing,”  M. Safwan Badr, M.D., WSU chair of Internal Medicine and chief of the WSU Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

9 to 9:40 a.m.: “Management of Hypoventilation Disorders during Sleep,” Anan Salloum, M.D., WSU assistant professor of Internal Medicine and chief of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine
9:40 to 10 a.m.: break

10 to 10:30 a.m.: “ Infection Control in the Sleep Laboratory,” Sylvia Whittington, R.N., VAMC Infection Control Department

10:30 to 11:15 a.m.: “Home Sleep Studies: Indications, Efficacy and Caveats,” James Rowley, M.D., WSU professor of Internal Medicine,  Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine 

11:15 a.m. to noon: “Mindfulness Meditation to Manage Stress: Practice Pearls,” Morgan Hurst, Ph.D., VAMC Health Psychologist supervisor, MH Integrated Care Programs
Noon to 1 p.m.: lunch

1 to 1:40 p.m.: “Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia,” Jennifer Martin, Ph.D., FAASM, professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA

1:40 to 2:20 p.m.: “Strategies to Optimize Mask Fitting and Enhance PAP Adherence,” Dr. Ken, M.D., assistant professor, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, University of Washington

2:20 to 2:30 p.m.: break

2:30 to 4:10 p.m.: “Interesting Case Studies,” Dr. Chowdhuri; Salam Zeineddine, M.D. WSU assistant professor of Internal Medicine; Deborah Vogel, nurse practioner; Joseph Dionne, respiratory and CPAP therapist

4:10 to 4:30 p.m.: Summation question and answer session
