Dr. Mark Edelstein dies at age 71

Mark Edelstein, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, died Jan. 4. He was 71.

Dr. Edelstein graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Wisconsin, where he majored in English and chemistry. He received his medical doctoral degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, and performed postdoctoral work at the Radiobiologic Institute in the Netherlands. He completed a medical residency and a hematology/oncology fellowship at Duke University and worked as a

physician for four years in the Netherlands before joining the medical staff at the John Dingell VA Hospital, where he cared for patients for 27 years, serving as chief of Medicine for more than 10.

He also was a research associate for the Michigan Cancer Foundation Detroit. He published extensively, participated in many clinical trials and earned many accolades, including the Wayne State University College Teaching Award and Staff Award for Excellence in Clinical Mentorship and Teaching.

Dr. Edelstein trained and inspired numerous medical students, residents and fellows.

He is survived by his wife, Terese Edelstein; children, Matthew Edelstein of Grosse Pointe Park, and Katherine (Vince) Facchiano of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister Jacki (Peter) Benn; and brother William (Barb Parmet) Edelstein, all of California.
