Dr. Mittal named Fulbright-Nehru Distinguished Chair for Surgery and Surgical Education

Vijay Mittal, M.D., clinical professor of Surgery for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, has been named the Fulbright-Nehru Distinguished Chair for Surgery and Surgical Education by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the J. William Fulbright Board.

Dr. Mittal, the section chief of General Surgery at Ascension Providence Hospital - Southfield Campus, was recognized for his leadership, education, mentorship and his scholarship in the field of

surgery.

The award, a collaboration between the government of India and the United States-India Education Foundation, is the most prestigious given by the Department of State under the umbrella of the Fulbright Board, along with the Government of India and USIEF. The award is rarely given to someone in the medical field.

Dr. Mittal served as program director of the General Surgery Department at Ascension Providence Hospital for more than 25 years. He established the Simulation and Education Center at Providence. He also was the chair of Surgery for the Southeast Michigan Center of Medical Education for the past two decades.

A former president of the Michigan Chapter of American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons U.S. Section, the Academy of Surgery of Detroit, the Detroit Surgical Association and the Indo-American Surgical Association, he recently received an honorary fellowship in the Association of Surgeons of India for his leadership in surgical education.

He also was recently elected governor of the American College of Surgeons, in which he represents the state of Michigan.
