Register now for Nov. 21 Reach Out to Youth

The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s chapter of the Student National Medical Association will host its 30th Reach Out to Youth event Nov. 21. Registration is now open.

The free program is open to children ages 7 to 11.

This year, because of the pandemic, Reach Out to Youth will be conducted virtually via Zoom with an introduction beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Reach Out to Youth seeks to introduce children in underrepresented populations to the possibility of careers in science and medicine. The event provides children a look into the world of medicine and an understanding that they can develop careers in that world.

SNMA/Reach Out to Youth leaders Nikita Wong and Marina Ngassa, both second-year medical students, said this year’s theme is “The Power of Vision 2020!”

“We want to both empower and inspire children with programming that will show them that they can achieve anything as long as they have a strong and positive image of themselves and maintain healthy habits that keep their body strong along the way,” they said.

Participants will learn about self-perception and how the brain interacts with our environment in the workshop “Who Am I?” They also will learn about toxic substances and how they affect the body and its development. Children will put this knowledge to the test in a clinical skills workshop, and will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion regarding the cycle of life and answers to the question, “Where do babies come from?”

Parents can register their children for the program here.
