Wayne State University School of Medicine Director of Diversity and Inclusion De’Andrea Matthews, D.Th., has been selected to receive the Diversity Business Leader Award from Corp! Magazine.
She will be honored at the digital magazine’s 13th annual Michigan’s Salute to Diversity Conference and Awards – Communities United, scheduled to take place virtually Oct. 5-8. Dr. Matthews will also be featured in the magazine’s November/December digital Flipbook Issue and in its ePublication.
“What an honor! My commitment to diversity was personal long before it became a part of my career path, so to be recognized in a professional capacity is very rewarding,” Dr. Matthews said. “I am humbled and glad to share with so many other honorees who have committed to this work.”
Corp! Magazine has recognized businesses and leaders who champion diversity initiatives and achievements within their organization or the community. Honorees are recognized for their work with individuals, groups or through a specific product, initiative, innovative program or activity that has a “visible, tangible or measurable impact on the perception of, attitude toward, and respect for a truly inclusive environment, where individuals are valued for their talent and ability to reach their full potential.”
Dr. Matthews oversees the School of Medicine’s Premedical Post Baccalaureate Program for first-generation college graduates from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. The program recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
In August, she was selected by the Global Forum for Education and Learning to receive its Top 100 Leaders in Education Award.
Dr. Matthews is an ex-officio member of the School of Medicine’s Admissions Committee and Diversity Task Force, a member of the School of Medicine Diversity Advisory Council since 2015, and the WSU College 2 Career Pipeline Steering Committee and National Post Baccalaureate Program Collaborative since 2012.
