BCAP summer program switches to online format

During the Covid-19 pandemic, upcoming summer programs have had to adapt to keep participants safe while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Because student safety is a top priority, the Biomedical Career Advancement Program is changing to an online format.

The program will be shortened from six to four weeks, and will start July 6. To facilitate the online format, each student will be provided with a Chromebook and internet access.

The BCAP is a collaborative program between the Wayne State University School of Medicine, the Michigan Area Health Education Center, the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Established in 2014 by Jennell White, Ph.D., assistant professor of Pharmacology, is dedicated to exposing youth to careers in the health sciences.

“We are excited to be able to offer students the BCAP research experience this year in an online format,” Dr. White said. “We are proud of the effort that went into providing a quality program while adapting to challenges presented by the current circumstances. There is a really great group of students this year and we are looking forward to a productive summer.”

As in previous years, students will be matched with a faculty mentor and will complete a research project. Students will also attend professional development sessions and complete labs through video calls and on other digital platforms. After successfully completing the BCAP program and presenting their research projects, students will receive a stipend and certificate at the closing ceremony July 31.
