“Health-care workers deserve hazard pay during covid-19 pandemic” is an opinion piece included in the April 3 edition of the newspaper.

Dr. Wood is a first-year Internal Medicine resident at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut.

“Being a resident physician in internal medicine, I work as part of a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses and other health professionals. For us, caring for patients with COVID-19 on the hospital floors and in the intensive care units has become our new norm,” he wrote. “And as our direct contact with infected patients has exponentially increased over the past few weeks, the water cooler chatter has heated up. We wonder aloud what we’re going to do when we run out of personal protective equipment, where we’re going to quarantine ourselves when we get sick, and how best to keep our loved ones safe.”

Dr. Wood was a Wayne State University student when he designed and led a culinary nutrition class for medical students, then took a year off medical school to earn his culinary degree from the New York Institute of Culinary Education in 2018. He returned to WSU the following year to complete his medical degree.
