The Michigan Chapter of the American College of Physicians has presented Jack D. Sobel, M.D., dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dean Sobel received the award, which is presented to a member who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to the organization of internists, during the ACP’s Michigan Chapter Scientific Meeting, held Oct. 10-13 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Recipients of the award are either fellows or masters and are looked upon as chapter leaders, advisors and mentors.

“It truly is an honor to receive this award from my peers,” said Dean Sobel, who has led the WSU School of Medicine since 2014. “I plan to continue earning this recognition by continuing my research, treating patients, and training medical students and physicians.”
Dean Sobel has also served WSU as chair of Internal Medicine and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases. He is a distinguished professor of Internal Medicine.

A graduate of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr. Sobel performed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Board certified internal medicine specialist in the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel and South Africa, he became a master in the American College of Physicians in 2013.

He specializes in Candida infections of the genitourinary tract, and his research has encompassed microbiology, immunology and molecular biology of Candida infections. He was the first to report multi-drug resistant vaginitis due to a variety of Candida species, as well as developing new treatment protocols. His focus on these infections has contributed to progress in unraveling the genetic basis for these infections.

In the last decade, he has turned his attention to other vaginal inflammatory conditions, notably recurrent and refractory bacterial vaginosis and immune mediated auto-inflammatory vaginitis, focusing on the role of the vaginal microbiome. His groundbreaking treatments are the standard of care throughout the world, and he trained nearly every physician who leads clinics specializing in the treatment of these infections throughout the United States.

He is the author of more than 500 manuscripts and more than 150 book chapters.
