Eva Waineo, M.D., is the head of the psychiatry clerkships and teaches psychiatry to M2s. This year she joined as the faculty advisor for Health and Wellness at WSUSOM, in which I am the class of 2021 representative. With Dr. Waineo’s help, we have been able to greatly expand on the Health and Wellness initiative and this year were integrated as part of the curriculum, which was a huge stride in terms of trying to improve student health and wellness and trying to change the culture of wellbeing and mental health in medicine.

Diane Levine, M.D., is well known to all School of Medicine students because of how much she does for all of us. In my first year, I was lucky enough to do an externship with her and she has been my mentor and advocate ever since. From supporting me with research/poster presentations to showing me how to be a strong clinician during hospital rounds to teaching me on an elective how to educate and provide feedback to students, she has shaped me into the successful woman, leader and future physician I will become in June. I could not have gotten so far in my career without her guidance and mentorship. I will forever be indebted to her generosity. She inspires me to work harder, give more, and help both patients and students achieve their maximum potential.

When I interviewed for residency positions this past fall, I was honored to speak proudly of my time spent working at Cass Clinic at every interview, as it was such a integral part of my medical school experience. George Costea, M.D., was a founder of the free clinic, and for the last few decades has continued to tirelessly serve as the primary provider at this clinic and has a deep passion for serving the members of the Detroit community who need care the most. His dedication to serving the underserved for so many years is so inspiring the students who volunteer in his clinic — I know he is responsible for sparking the drive for many of us, myself included, to follow in his footsteps and integrate community service into our own future medical careers. Volunteering at Cass Clinic is one of the most iconic experiences at the School of Medicine where you get to truly witness urban clinical excellence as a Wayne medical student, and it is all thanks to the amazing physician, Dr. Costea.

Colleen Linehan, M.D., is a practicing orthopedic surgeon at Covenant's Center for Advanced Orthopedics in Saginaw, Michigan. She is a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine's Class of 2002 and completed her residency at the University of Minnesota. In addition to being a busy practicing surgeon, Dr. Linehan spends a significant amount of time in the community assisting in coaching and training the Saginaw Spirit Youth girl's hockey team, playing in the annual Shocks and Saves charity hockey game, leading a local girl scout troop, and teaching skating lessons in the community. She is also involved extensively in teaching and mentoring students.
