Grand rounds to focus on female circumcision

The Wayne State University School of Medicine's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will present "Female Circumcision" as part of its grand rounds lecture series on Sept. 11.

The 8 a.m. lecture will feature Danita Akingba, M.D., M.A., assistant clinical professor of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Akingba will teach how to recognize female mutilation; discuss the historical, cultural and religious factors that weigh into the practice; teach obstetricians and gynecologists to recognize when they should be hypervigilant for the practice; and help physicians become comfortable with opening dialog with their patients about the practice.

The session will take place at Sinai-Grace Hospital's ground-floor auditorium.
