Global Health Alliance begins Global and Urban Health and Equity course schedule for 2018-19

The Wayne State University Global Health Alliance launched the Global and Urban Health and Equity Program for the 2018-2019 year Aug. 2 in the School of Medicine's Margherio Conference Center.

The goal of the program is to strengthen patient care with a dose of cultural humility. GLUE provides a greater awareness of cultural and socioeconomic factors, and emphasizes the importance of communication skills in medical practice. The free two-year longitudinal program involves seminars, group learning, mentoring, and international and local projects, and is based on Consortium of Universities for Global Health, or CUGH, core competencies. It is designed for medical, public health, nursing, pharmacy and graduate students; and residents, fellows, faculty and allied health care professionals interested in global health. CUGH connects the group with a worldwide network of 145 academic institutions, program materials and funding opportunities.

New this year, first-year medical students will be part of a piloted global health track. All other participants, including third- and fourth-year medical students, will receive a certificate. To receive a certificate of completion, students must participate in the monthly seminars, a research/capstone project, field experiences and symposia.

GLUE was developed by the WSU Global Health Alliance to meet the growing needs of students and physicians to acquire global health experiences by providing a well-structured program to coordinate and support their endeavors.

All 2018-2019 GLUE classes are held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Margherio. Topics include:

Travel Skills and Safety (Nov. 8)
Health Equity and Social Justice (Dec. 6)
Infectious Disease/Neglected Tropical Diseases (Jan. 10)
Collaboration, Partnering and Communication (Feb. 7)
Professional Practice (March 7)
Capstone Review/National Public Health Week (April 4)
Special Populations (May 2)

The program includes two and a half hours of reading and assignments via Canvas Classroom, and equal time at the seminars.
