Wayne State welcomes 37 new medical residents to GME programs

Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education Tsveti Markova, M.D., welcomes the School of Medicine's new medical residents.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine welcomed 37 new residents and one fellow to its sole-sponsored Graduate Medical Education programs with a daylong orientation June 26 in the Margherio Family Conference Center in Detroit.

The new physicians earned medical degrees from Indiana University School of Medicine, University of Alexandria Faculty of Medicine, New York Medical College and many more colleges in the United States and across the world, including Canada, the United Kingdom and India. While Detroit is a new city of residence for most, seven of the new residents are graduates of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Four of the new residents will participate in a transitional year at Wayne State before moving to another program. One physician will begin a two-year fellowship in the School of Medicine's Ophthalmic Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery program.

"This year's class of residents is exceptional. We want to make them feel welcome at orientation, using interactive games and activities to introduce them to important concepts of Graduate Medical Education, engage them immediately in the clinical learning environment, their professional development, our resident well-being tools, what the GME office does, and more," said Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education Tsveti Markova, M.D., F.A.A.C.P., who also is professor and endowed chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences.

Orientation was organized to explain the intricacies of a residency at Wayne State while also providing a central location for all new residents to meet each other and GME faculty and staff.

Orientation activities included a "GME Jeopardy" game quizzing contestants on GME topics and policies using categories such as We are the Warriors, GME-ese and The Survey Says; a "Family Feud" game to introduce the Clinical Learning Environment Review; a patient communication exercise; an introduction to the Shiffman Medical Library and its electronic resources; an overview of GME basics and benefits; a welcome from the Resident Council president; and a resource fair featuring School of Medicine vendors and offices.

The physicians also attended smaller orientations specific to their hospital and their program last week.

This month, the physicians will formally begin residency training in Wayne State's Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Otolaryngology and Urology programs located at Wayne State's partner hospitals. Depending on the specialty, physicians not in a transitional year program will continue their education with WSU for the next three to seven years.

At the end of the day, the Resident Quality Council hosted a welcome dinner at the Traffic Jam and Snug restaurant in Detroit.
