Arun Rishi, Ph.D., professor of Oncology for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, was one of eight Indian American scientists recently honored for their outstanding contributions to cancer research.

Dr. Rishi was recognized by the Society of Asian American Scientists in Cancer Research. He, along with his colleagues, received the honor during the American Association for Cancer Research meeting April 14-18 in Chicago.

Also a professor of Oncology for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute In addition, Dr. Rishi has been working as a health science specialist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs since 2001, and was appointed a Research Career Scientist in 2017.

He obtained his master's degree in biochemistry from University College London and a doctorate in molecular biology from Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine in London.

The other scientists honored included Lalita Shevde-Samant, Subhash Chauhan, Selvarangan Ponnazhagan, Balaraman Kalyanaraman, Tayyaba Hasan, Anirban Maitra and Priyabrata Mukherjee. The society said the honorees have made significant impact in discovering novel biomarkers for the early diagnosis, prognosis and risk assessment of various cancers, and have discovered novel drugs for the management and treatment of cancers.

The SAASCR is a non-political and non-profit organization founded in 2004. More than 5,000 cancer research scientists from Asia, mainly of Indian origin, who work in the United States and Canada, are members of the society.
