Reference guide to pediatric care by Dr. Deepak Kamat wins book award

A Wayne State University School of Medicine pediatrician's reference guide has been recognized with a 2018 Independent Publishers Book Award.

"American Academy of Pediatrics Quick Reference Guide to Pediatric Care," by Deepak Kamat, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.P., professor of WSU Pediatrics, received the silver medal in the reference books category in the 22nd annual international competition. The book is in its second edition.

"It is an honor to be recognized by the independent international organization," said Dr. Kamat, who also serves as the vice chair of Education in the WSU Department of Pediatrics and the designated institutional official for the DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan. "My sincere hope is that this book will help health care providers taking care of children provide better care to children all over the world."

Launched in 1996 and conducted each year to honor the year's best independently published books, the "IPPY" Awards recognize merit in a broad range of subjects and reward authors and publishers who "take chances and break new ground."

Dr. Kamat described the 1,236-page guide as providing "the pediatric resident, pediatrician, family physician and pediatric nurse practitioners information they need while seeing patients or in between patients without having to sift through mounds of information."

In addition, Dr. Kamat is co-editor of "Common Cardiac Issues in Pediatrics," published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and released last week.

The book's scope includes signs and symptoms, management of patients with acquired or congenital heart disease, cardiac implications of common infectious diseases, preventive cardiology strategies and other issues frequently managed or evaluated by primary care clinicians. The book features information on preventive cardiology strategies, patient evaluation and more issues in primary cardiac care.

This is the sixth book Dr. Kamat has edited. He is associate editor of AAP's "Textbook Pediatric Care" (first and second edition); editor in chief of "Pediatric Care On Line," an online publication updated every three months; lead editor of AAP's "Textbook of Global Child Health" (first and second edition); and editor of "Challenging Cases in Pediatric Diagnosis."

Dr. Kamat is active in multiple national and international medical societies. He has written and co-written more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, book chapters and case reports. He serves on the editorial board of five journals and as ad hoc manuscript reviewer for many journals.
