Dr. Kellie McFarlin, '00, appointed to Accreditation Review Council on Education

Kellie McFarlin, M.D., a 2000 graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, was recently appointed by the American College of Surgeons to the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

A senior staff member of the Henry Ford Hospital's Department of Surgery and a clinical assistant professor of Surgery for the School of Medicine, Dr. McFarlin will serve a three year term on the board.

Dr. McFarlin completed a National Institutes of Health Research Fellowship as a NASA medical branch researcher in Houston, Texas, and an Advanced GI and Minimally Invasive Surgical Fellowship with the University of South Florida's Department of Surgery. She completed her surgery residency at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2008.

She has advanced research in the fields of surgical oncology, pancreatic cancer and immunotherapy as a principal investigator. She has been recognized for her outstanding service with numerous awards, including the John D. Dingell Veterans Administration Medical Center Excellence in Surgical Service Award.

The ACS has sponsored the ARC/STSA since its 1972 inception, and provides representation and guidance through two board appointments, which are nominated by the ACS's Committee on Interprofessional Education and Practice. The ARC/STSA is a private, not-for-profit accreditation body that in conjunction with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs accredits surgical technology and surgical assisting programs throughout the United States.
