St. Mary Mercy Livonia Hospital has named Wayne State University School of Medicine graduate Matthew Griffin, M.D. '91, M.B.A., F.A.C.E.P., F.A.A.E.M., its new chief medical officer.

Dr. Griffin began his role in early February, overseeing medical staff administration, graduate medical education, patient safety, clinical quality, accreditation and care management, said hospital spokesman Bobby Maldonado.

Dr. Griffin is a resident of Livonia and a Navy veteran who interned in San Diego after graduation, then served as a general medical officer in Okinawa, Japan, and Winter Harbor, Maine, from 1992 to 1995. He returned to Detroit in 1995 to complete his three-year residency training in Emergency Medicine with WSU at Detroit Receiving Hospital, serving as chief resident in his final year. He completed the Physician Executive M.B.A. program at the University of Tennessee in 2011.

Dr. Griffin received the WSU College Teaching Award in 2009. He was selected as vice president of Medical Affairs for Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit in 2009, and also served for two years as vice president of Medical Affairs for Huron Valley Sinai Hospital in Commerce.

St. Mary Mercy Livonia is a 304-bed hospital and part of Ann Arbor-based St. Joseph Mercy Health System and Livonia-based Trinity Health.
