Kamran Shah, M.D., has been named interim chair of the Wayne State University Department of Radiology, effective immediately.

Dr. Shah, a clinical associate professor and program director of the Diagnostic Radiology residency, replaces Wilbur Smith Jr., M.D., who is stepping down from the chairmanship in anticipation of retirement in 2018.

Dean Jack D. Sobel, M.D., announced Dr. Shah's appointment Feb. 19.

Dr. Shah joined the School of Medicine as a clinical assistant professor of Radiology in 2012.

Named Radiology Educator of the Year in 2014 and 2017 by Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center, Dr. Shah has mentored numerous students and developed new curriculum for radiology education paralleling published American Board of Radiology and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education standards.

The executive vice president, chief informatics officer and neuroradiologist for L. Reynolds and Associates, Dr. Shah's academic interests include neuroradiology, neuro-oncology, education and medical informatics.

Board certified in Radiology and in Neuroradiology, Dr. Shah is a member of the Michigan Radiological Society, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Neuroradiology, the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, the Association of Program Directors in Radiology, the Association of University Radiologists and the American College of Radiology.

He received his bachelor's degree from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ill., in 1990, and his medical degree from Chicago Medical School in 2005. He completed a preliminary year internship in Medicine at the University of Illinois, then a Radiology residency and Medical Informatics Fellowship at the University of Maryland. He also completed a Neuroradiology Fellowship at Northwestern University and a Nuclear Medicine Fellowship at Rush University.
