GVSU football player first student to earn medical student spot through early assurance program

Collin Schlosser, a 2017 graduate and Laker football player, is the first Grand Valley State University student admitted to the Wayne State University School of Medicine through an Early Assurance Program between the two schools.

The partnership between Grand Valley and Wayne State was established in February. Wayne State University will reserve five slots in its medical school for qualified Grand Valley students.

Schlosser got the news of his acceptance during football practice.

"I was ecstatic when I found out I had been selected. I was actually in the locker room, which I know sounds cheesy, but I was there when I got the email," Schlosser said. "I immediately started yelling. No one knew what was going on, but when I told them we all hugged and celebrated."

This was not the only time Schlosser, who majored in biomedical sciences, has mixed academics with his athletic career. He also earned NCAA Division II Academic All-American Honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Those who have watched Schlosser throughout his college career have taken notice of his hard work.

"Collin is an unbelievable person," said head coach Matt Mitchell. "He is one of the most natural leaders I have ever seen, both on and off the field. As a coach, it has been extremely gratifying watching him succeed."

On the field, Schlosser, a linebacker, had an outstanding senior season in 2017 with 80 tackles.

Schlosser said his passion to attend medical school stems from wanting to help people.

"I want to have a significant impact immediately. That was one of the reasons I liked Wayne State," he said. "They have many programs within the greater Detroit area, and you can get out and treat people. It's hands-on experience."

Schlosser is preparing to start medical school in the fall.
