Reach Out to Youth registration now open

The Black Medical Association at the Wayne State University School of Medicine will present the 29th annual Reach Out to Youth Program at the school Feb. 24.

The free program seeks to present the world of medicine and science to urban children ages 7 to 11. Parents are encouraged to register their children for the program by Jan. 19 at diversity@med.wayne.edu. Call 313-577-1598 for information.

Reach Out to Youth allows children to participate in interactive small-group sessions in anatomy, physiology and clinical medicine to whet their appetite for educations and careers in medical fields. The program targets inner-city youth to boost career motivation, self-esteem and knowledge about science and medicine.

More than 100 students and 100 parents are expected to attend this year, with medical students and faculty members volunteering as tour guides, workshop leaders and presenters from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Scott Hall. This year's theme is "Fitness and Nutrition: Don't Just Think About It, Be About It!"

Parents will participate in a day of separate workshops focusing on healthy lifestyles, obesity and "Preparing Your Child for Medical School."
