The Detroit Medical Orchestra launches its ninth season Nov. 19 with a free performance at the Community Arts Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State University.
The 4 p.m. concert will feature the overture to "L'Italiana in Algeri" by Gioachino Rossini, "Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo" by Aaron Copeland and "Symphony No. 4 Op. 90 in A major," more commonly known as "The Italian," by Felix Mendelssohn.
The new season begins with a new music director and conductor, Zeljko Milicevic, music director and conductor of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and senior director of the Oakland Youth Orchestras.
Milicevic graduated from Wayne State University with a bachelor's degree in music education and violin performance. He completed his master's degree in music education at the University of Michigan. He also earned a certificate in orchestral studies from WSU with an emphasis in conducting and violin performance. An adjunct professor of String Pedagogy for Oakland University, he has led orchestra programs in Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools, Utica Community Schools and Farmington Public Schools and recently served as director of orchestras and district string coordinator for Oxford Community Schools.
A member of the Flint Symphony Orchestra since 1987, Milicevic was appointed associate concertmaster in 2011. He has performed with a number of Michigan regional orchestras, including the Michigan Opera Theatre, Saginaw-Bay Orchestra and the Midland Symphony Orchestra. He performs with the Ivybrooke Strings in chamber music settings, specializing in violin and piano duo.
The Detroit Medical Orchestra, formed by a group of Wayne State University School of Medicine students and faculty musicians in 2010, is a 60-member orchestra consisting of medical students, medical school faculty, physicians and nursing staff.
Audience members can join the orchestra for an afterglow at the Traffic Jam and Snug Restaurant, 511 W. Canfield, Detroit, immediately following the concert. Fifteen percent of all meal and drink receipts will be donated to the orchestra if you mention you are with the DMO when paying your bill.
