Wayne State's newest resident physicians arrive on campus

The Wayne State University School of Medicine welcomed 56 new residents and one fellow to its sole-sponsored Graduate Medical Education programs with a daylong orientation June 27 in the Margherio Family Conference Center in Detroit.

The new physicians earned medical degrees from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Illinois College of Medicine, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and many more colleges in the United States and across the world, including Canada, Turkey, Lebanon and India. While Detroit was a new destination for most, 12 of the new residents are graduates of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Fifteen residents will participate in a transitional year at Wayne State before moving to another program.

"Once again the WSU programs 100 percent matched, with outstanding candidates. This year's class of residents is terrific. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and learning experiences, which is wonderful," said Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education Tsveti Markova, M.D., F.A.A.C.P., who also is professor and endowed chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences.

Orientation was organized to explain the intricacies of a residency at Wayne State while also providing a central location for all new residents to meet and greet each other and GME faculty and staff.

Orientation activities included a "GME Jeopardy" game quizzing contestants on GME topics and policies, an introduction to the Shiffman Medical Library and its electronic resources, an overview of GME basics and benefits, a Clinical Learning Environment Review, a lecture on Adult Learning Theory in Medical Education, a patient communication exercise, a welcome from the Resident Council president and a "Resource and Knowledge Bazaar" featuring frequented School of Medicine vendors and offices.

"With orientation, we always try to make it interactive and fun but also useful and informative," Dr. Markova added.

The physicians also attended smaller orientations specific to their hospital and their program the remainder of last week.

This month, the physicians will formally begin residency and fellowship training in Wayne State's Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Otolaryngology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Urology programs located at Wayne State's partner hospitals. Depending on the specialty, physicians not in a transitional year program will continue their education with WSU for the next three to seven years.

At the end of the day, the Resident Quality Council hosted a welcome dinner at the Traffic Jam and Snug restaurant in Detroit.
