WSU hosts 44th annual Michigan Pharmacology Colloquium

The Wayne State University School of Medicine will host the 44th annual Michigan Pharmacology Colloquium on June 16.

The day-long scientific meeting involves Department of Pharmacology faculty, post-doctoral students and graduate students from WSU, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the University of Toledo. The colloquium rotates annually among the four participating universities.

The colloquium, said Nicholas Davis, Ph.D., professor of Pharmacology, puts a spotlight on graduate students, who will present their research in poster format or in 15-minute oral presentations. The venue is often the students' first true scientific presentation.

This year's keynote speaker is Tim Errington, Ph.D., metascience manager for the Center for Open Science. He will present "Improving Openness and Reproducibility of Scientific Research" from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Margherio Family Conference Center.

Stephen Lanier, WSU vice president for Research, and Raymond Mattingly, Ph.D., chair of WSU Pharmacology, will give opening remarks at 9 a.m. in the Margherio Family Conference Center, followed by oral platform sessions and a panel discussion.

The panel discussion, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., is titled "Beyond the Postdoc-to-PI Path," and features Levi Blazer, Ph.D., scientific manager of Toronto Recombinant Antibody Centre; Justin Ways, Ph.D., administrative fellow and assistant professor for Mercy College of Ohio; and Lauren Tanabe, Ph.D., an independent science writer.

Poster presentations will take place in the Scott Hall cafeteria.

Participants will end the day with an awards reception from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m. at Slows Bar BQ.
