Seven members of the Wayne State University School of Medicine faculty have been granted tenure and 31 were promoted to the rank of professor or associate professor.
"This is the third year in a row that the university's Promotion and Tenure Committee has recommended promotion for all of the faculty candidates recommended by the School of Medicine," said Virginia Delaney-Black, M.D., M.P.H., vice dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development. "In all, more than 100 faculty promotions have been approved in that period."
Those receiving tenure include Thomas Sanderson, Ph.D., associate professor of Emergency Medicine and the Cardiovascular Institute; Karen MacDonell, Ph.D., associate professor of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences; Dionysis Tsilimingras, M.D., associate professor of Family Medicine; Gregory Dyson, Ph.D., associate professor of Oncology; Seongho Kim, Ph.D., associate professor of Oncology; Xuequn Chen, Ph.D., associate professor of Physiology; and R. Daniel Bonfil, Ph.D., professor of Urology and of Pathology.
"Being promoted to the rank of professor with tenure means to me a recognition and a reward for a job well done in research, teaching and service during all these years at the Wayne State University School of Medicine," said Dr. Bonfil, who has been a member of the faculty for 15 years. "As such, I feel this achievement is a career motivator that gives me the freedom to pursue new research and teaching avenues."
Dr. Chen, a faculty member for six and one-half years, said tenure means he now fully belongs.
"Since I came to Wayne State University, I have enjoyed my time in my department, the School of Medicine and the university," he said. "Getting tenure here means a recognition of my qualifications and career potentials from my school and university. I feel that I have finally become an integrative member of this wonderful place, and I have more responsibility to contribute to its fame and excellence."
The Promotion and Tenure Ceremony for the recipients and their families is scheduled for June 15, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Margherio Family Conference Center.
