Mock site visit set for March 6-7

In anticipation of a site visit by representatives of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education to the Wayne State University School of Medicine during April 24-26, administrators will conduct a mock site visit March 6-7.

Richard Baker, M.D., vice dean of Medical Education, announced the members of the mock site visit team this week. The team will assist in examining whether the School of Medicine is prepared for the actual LCME site visit in late April.

"These experts will visit our School of Medicine, examine our efforts to address issues cited by the LCME, and make recommendations," Dr. Baker said. "They will help us test ourselves in anticipation of the LCME site visit in April."

The members of the mock site visit team may ask questions of faculty, students and staff during their visit.

The mock site visit team consists of:

Debra Klamen, M.D., M.H.P.E., the associate dean for Education and Curriculum, and professor and chair of the Department of Medical Education for the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

Dr. Klamen earned her bachelor's degree in Genetics at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and her medical degree at the University of Chicago - Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed a psychiatric residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and was chief resident her last year there. She completed a master's of Health Professional Education degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1998, and was named a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 1999.

Dr. Klamen served on the Behavioral Science Question Writing Committee of the National Board of Medical Examiners and developed and implemented a course in the M1/M2 years of medical school titled "Essentials of Clinical Medicine." She has written numerous articles on medical school education, particularly in the area of performance evaluation and assessment. She has spoken extensively on the topic of stress management for physicians around the country for the last 14 years.

Her current interests include the development of curricula for medical schools in the areas of patient safety and improving third-year clerkships through a process management lens.
Ricky Mercado, M.P.H., C.H.E.S., Accreditation and Special Projects coordinator for the dean of the Baylor College of Medicine.

Mercado is responsible for project management related to LCME and the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states.

He ensures compliance with accreditation standards by developing, implementing and maintaining compliance processes within the school. He also provides direction and guidance on quality improvement, and management of initiatives and programs, and is responsible for accreditation gap analysis and assisting leadership in developing continuous quality improvement plans.

In addition to continuously reviewing accreditation requirements and updating internal processes and forms to ensure compliance with criteria, Mercado advises his school of medicine and its committees to ensure consistent compliance with ongoing accreditation requirements and outcome standards of accreditation.

He plans and oversees site visits for the medical school, and serves as a liaison with the LCME for resources, tools and best practices of peer institutions to inform the school's accreditation process.

Erica Dian Brownfield, M.D., F.A.C.P., professor of Medicine, vice chair for Education in the Department of Medicine and assistant dean of Medical Education for the Emory School of Medicine.

Dr. Brownfield graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles with a bachelor's degree in Biology. She attended the Chicago Medical School in 1996 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1999. She joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at Emory in 1999 as a clinician educator. Since 1999, Dr. Brownfield has been actively involved in the medical school and house staff programs. She served as the co-director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship from 2000 to 2006 before becoming director in 2006.

Dr. Brownfield has served on numerous committees for the medical school, including the Admissions Committee, the Clerkship Directors Committee, the Progress and Promotions Committee, the Executive Curriculum committee and the Curriculum Planning Committee. In the Department of Medicine, she founded the Executive Curriculum Committee and has served on the Department of Medicine Education Committee, the Faculty Development Advisory Committee, the Administration Restructuring Committee and the Strategic Implementation Planning Committee. She served as president of the University Senate and chair of the Faculty Council at Emory, and is a member of the Provost Advisory Committee, the Faculty Advisory Committee for Finance and Administration, and the Southern Association of College and Schools Steering Committee.

She has served on the Association of American Medical Colleges Southern Group on Educational Affairs since 2008, and was recently asked to serve as a Faculty Fellow for the AAMC's Liaison Committee of Medical Education.
