A Wayne State University School of Medicine researcher has been selected to receive the President's Achievement Award from the Society for Reproductive Investigation.
Jennifer Condon, Ph.D., associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and member of the Wayne State University Perinatal Initiative, will receive the award in March during the society's 64th annual Scientific Meeting in Orlando, Fla.
The society presents the award annually to a member whose record in scientific investigation is outstanding and assures a continued productive career in research. "I believe that you are most deserving of the award, based on your productive, pioneering work in the field of parturition, your unwavering commitment to scholarship in our field and the great potential of your success in the future," society President Yoel Sadovsky, M.D., wrote to Dr. Condon.
"I am pleased, honored and humbled to accept this award and to join past recipients who I have long admired and respected," said Dr. Condon, a member of the Wayne State University Perinatal Initiative, and of the Department of Physiology and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. "I sincerely thank the Society of Reproductive Investigation and its president, Dr. Yoel Sadovsky. I'd also like to thank the members of my lab, Chandrashekara Kyathanahalli, Ph.D., and Judith Ingles for their tireless efforts in moving our research goals continuously forward; my department chair, Chaur-Dong Hsu, M.D., M.P.H.; Dr. Sonia Hassan (M.D., associate dean of Maternal, Perinatal and Child Health); and Dr. Roberto Romero (M.D., D.Med.Sci., chief of the Perinatology Research Branch) for their unwavering support."
She also credited the award to the "inspiration and strength I have received" from her husband, Jeyasuria Pancharatnam, Ph.D., an assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the PRB.
Dr. Condon, a Grosse Pointe, Mich., resident who also serves as director of the Reproductive Sciences Graduate Program and co-research director for the Women's Reproductive Health Research Fellowship Program, will present a talk during the Parturition Satellite Symposium when she travels to the meeting to receive the award. She will be accompanied by Ingles, who has been selected to present her research, "Tocolytic Activation of Caspase 3 Via Preconditioning of the Myometrial Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Response."
Dr. Condon's laboratory focuses on defining the molecular mechanisms that regulate gestational length to understand the processes that lead to the onset of term and preterm birth.
