John Carethers, M.D., a 1989 graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians, the national organization of internists, and will be honored at the group's Internal Medicine Meeting 2017, to be held March 30-April 1 in San Diego.
Dr. Carethers is the John G. Searle Professor and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan. He also is a professor of Human Genetics.
The Detroit native received the Wayne State University School of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. He earned a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from Wayne State University in 1985. He completed a residency at the Harvard Medical School-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital in 1992 and a fellowship in Internal Medicine Gastroenterology with the University of Michigan Health System in 1995.
Dr. Carethers' clinical and research interests are hereditary colon cancer syndromes. He is the principal investigator on two projects funded by the National Institutes of Health. He is a fellow of the ACP and the American Society of Internal Medicine, a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an elected councilor of the American Association of Physicians. In 2012, Dr. Carethers was elected to the independent nonprofit Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
The ACP is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. Masters are elected upon recommendation by the ACP's Awards Committee and voted on by the organization's Board of Regents. The committee considers qualities such as strength of character, integrity, perseverance, leadership, compassion and devotion, as well as clinical expertise and commitment to advancing the art and science of medicine. Masters must have made a notable contribution to medicine, including teaching, outstanding work in clinical medicine (research or practice), contributions to preventive medicine, improvements in the delivery of health care and/or contributions to medical literature.
