A new journal led by students of the Wayne State University School of Medicine was presented as a poster at Learn Serve Lead 2016, the annual meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges, held Nov. 11-15 in Seattle.

John Dawdy, M.D. '16, an intern in the School of Medicine's Internal Medicine Residency Program with the Detroit Medical Center, presented "Clinical Research in Practice, the Journal of Team Hippocrates: Student-run journal as a novel approach to incorporating evidence-based medicine into medical school curriculum." The poster reviewed the methods, editorial workflow, participation, publication statistics, readership, benefits of and lessons learned from Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates.

The open-access, peer-reviewed scholarly journal, launched last year, is a pedagogical instrument of the school, and is devoted to critical appraisals of research developed with regard to an actual clinical context and application. It is published up to six times a year in collaboration with the WSU Library System.

Dr. Dawdy was a senior editor for the journal while attending the School of Medicine, along with fellow alumnus John Timothy Caldwell, M.D., Ph.D., '16. Co-authors include Joshua Neds-Fox, a librarian in the Department of University of Libraries; Internal Medicine Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Education Diane Levine, M.D.; and Family Medicine Assistant Professor James Meza, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Meza, who serves as faculty editor, conceived the journal and has supported it to ensure its continued success, Dr. Levine said.

The journal is available online at http://digitalcommons.wayne.edu/crp/. Web analytics indicate that readership spans the globe, with content accessed from Africa, Europe, Australia, North America and South America. There are 43 papers in the journal, which have already been downloaded 5,083 times as of Nov. 30, 2016.
