Class of 1996's Dr. Stephen Shaya recognized for global innovation and leadership

Wayne State University School of Medicine alumnus Stephen Shaya, M.D., '96, was awarded the 2016 Global Medical Innovation and Leadership Award at We Care for Humanity's annual Global Officials of Dignity Awards, held Aug. 19 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Dr. Shaya also received a certificate of achievement from the New York State Senate, and spoke at the We Care for Humanity's Humanitarian Summit, held Aug. 17 at the U.N.

The event was hosted by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Benin to the United Nations.

Dr. Shaya received his undergraduate degree from WSU and is a member of the School of Medicine's Class of 1996. He completed his residency training in Family Medicine at North Oakland Medical Center and pursued a fellowship at WSU in Occupational and Environmental Health.

Since 2004, he has been chief medical officer of J&B Medical Supply, a Wixom, Mich.-based global health care solutions company founded in 1996. Dr. Shaya leads the planning and development of new enterprises within the company, overseeing strategy, innovation and growth.

The company's portfolio includes Health Net Connect, a telehealth product and solution provider created to overcome traditional health care delivery challenges through a virtual clinical grade telemedicine and telehealth platform.

With his medical expertise combined with business acumen and philanthropic spirit, he is undoubtedly revolutionizing the medical industry with long-term results that will surely impact the world," said Maria Amor Torres, founder and president of We Care for Humanity and a princess in the Philippines' Royal House of Baloi, in a news release. "He truly deserves to be recognized for all his contributions to humanity."

Dr. Shaya also has received the 2015 Global Distinguished Health Care Award from the Center of Economic and Leadership Development, and a United States Congressional Commendation. He is a Knight of Grace for the Knights of Malta.

Founded in 2011 by Torres, We Care for Humanity is a California-based non-profit organization dedicated to current global issues and concerns.
