WSU's Gold Humanism Honor Society wins national outstanding chapter award

The Gold Humanism Honor Society recognized the Wayne State University School of Medicine GHHS student organization with one of five Outstanding Chapter Awards given nationally in 2016.

There are more than 140 active undergraduate medical education chapters at medical schools through the world. The mission of the honor society is to recognize individuals who are exemplars of humanistic patient care and who can serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine.

The WSU chapter, founded in 2005, aims to instill and sustain a culture of respect, dignity and compassion for patients and professionals in the health care environment. Members include medical students, residents and faculty physicians, and are nominated by fellow medical students, residents or staff members of the School of Medicine or the Detroit Medical Center. Members are then selected based on their demonstration of excellence in clinical care, leadership and dedication to service, and consistently going beyond the call of duty to enrich society by advancing the field of medicine and demonstrating compassion for all.

"This is indeed a big honor for the WSU chapter," said Professor of Physiology Noreen Rossi, M.D., a GHHS member who won the WSU chapter's Leonard Town Humanism in Medicine Award for faculty this year. "These students - and faculty members too - are the best. They embody what it means to be a physician in all aspects of caring."
