Dr. Walz named associate dean for Research and Graduate Programs

Daniel Walz, Ph.D., has been appointed associate dean for Research and Graduate Programs for the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Walz also serves as director of the school's M.D.-Ph.D. program and is a professor of Physiology. He replaces Associate Dean of Graduate Programs Stanley Terlecky, Ph.D., who is leaving for a position with the new medical school under development at Seton Hall University.

"Dr. Walz is the ideal replacement for Dr. Terlecky because the two previously split the duties associated with the graduate programs," said Dean Jack D. Sobel, M.D., who announced the appointment June 1. "Dr. Walz was already overseeing programmatic policy and managing academic concerns as they relate more broadly to Wayne State University. He has accrued a lifetime of support for medical research and education."

"I'm very happy to continue to oversee this extremely successful program for the school," Dr. Walz said. "The graduate programs we offer are one of the strengths of the school, and I plan to make them even stronger."

Dr. Walz joined the WSU Department of Physiology in 1973. He served for 10 years as vice president for Research for the university before his appointment as associate dean of Research for the School of Medicine. He is a former dean of the WSU Graduate School.

The program director for three National Institutes of Health-supported institutional training grants, Dr. Walz has directed the dissertation work of 10 doctoral students and trained eight post-doctoral fellows. He received a bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. He then received a master's degree in Biochemistry from St. Louis University and a doctoral degree in Physiology from WSU.
