Herbert Roth, M.D, Class of 1961, and Marlene Roth, M.D., Class of 1996, celebrated their respective medical school graduations May 14 during the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Medical Alumni Reunion Day.
Dr. Herbert Roth emigrated from Romania via Austria after WWII when he was 13 years old with only a suitcase and the clothes on his back. He and his family were sponsored by relatives in the Detroit area, and lived in their basement while making their way in a new country. Through perseverance and determination, he became a busy, well-respected physician.
Dr. Marlene Roth was influenced by her father's commitment to community. "During my childhood, my dad had a very busy practice, yet he was still the neighborhood 'doc' who everyone would come to with a question or concern, not only because they trusted his knowledge but because he has such a wonderful bedside manner," she said. "He was and still is an inspiration to watch."
Dr. Roth pursued her medical degree by following in her father's footsteps, attending the WSU School of Medicine while starting her own family.
The father-daughter team now shares a pediatric practice in Beverly Hills, Mich., where, working side-by-side, they inspire young families to develop and raise healthy children.
Dr. Herbert Roth and his wife Marilyn have been married for 56 years and have three other children who all live and work in the Detroit area.
