Dr. Chaur-Dong Hsu appointed chair of WSU Obstetrics and Gynecology

Chaur-Dong Hsu, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.O.G., has been appointed chair of the Wayne State University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The appointment is effective March 1, 2016.

Dr. Hsu will replace Associate Professor Jay Berman, M.D., who has served as interim chair since last April.

"Dr. Hsu is an ideal candidate to lead the department into the future," said Jack D. Sobel, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine. "He has a strong interest in research and a combined background in obstetrics and gynecology, and maternal-fetal medicine. We expect he will replicate the successes he has accomplished in his prior leadership positions."

A tenured professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive at State University of New York, Stony Brook School of Medicine, and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and chair of the Research Committee at NuHealth System/Nassau University Medical Center -- positions he has held since 2008 -- Dr. Hsu received his medical degree from Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan in 1982. He obtained his master of public health degree from The John Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Md., in 1991. He completed Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, in 1990. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and a clinical fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, both at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, from 1991 to 1993.

A former member of the faculty at Yale University and Duke University, he was the Leon McGoogan Endowed Chair and Professor at the University of Nebraska, where he also served as director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He later became tenured professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Westchester Medical Center, New York Medical College, a position he held from 2002 to 2008.

Board certified in General Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Maternal-Fetal Medicine Subspecialty by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Hsu's research has focused on personalized obstetrics, specifically preeclampsia and intra-amniotic infection during pregnancy. His work led to his election to the Board of Directors (and positions as secretary and treasurer) of the North American Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy. He is on the editorial boards and journal reviews for national and international journals, and is an educational consultant. A well-funded researcher with more than 200 publications and abstracts, he has been invited nationally and internationally to give numerous lectures, and to consult on pregnancy complications involving preeclampsia and high-risk pregnancy disorders.

Under his leadership, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Nassau University Medical Center was the only department in Long Island to receive the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award four years in a row (2012 to 2015) and the 2012 Maternity Care Excellence Award from Healthgrades. The department also earned Healthcare Association of New York State recognition for the lowest C-section rate and highest vaginal birth after C-section rate in the region. Dr. Hsu has also been successful in implementing an evidence-based bundle known as "Hsu's Bundle" to reduce C-section surgical site infections to nearly zero.

Recognized as an excellent educator, Dr. Hsu has been honored by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology for the Best Teaching Award over the past several years. He has been included in numerous lists of prestigious physicians, including America's TOP Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Best Doctors in America, Best Doctors and TOP Doctors in New York Metro Area, and Best Doctor/TOP Doctor in New York Magazine.
