Second edition of Dr. Kamat's 'Global Child Health' textbook published

Deepak Kamat, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.P., professor of Pediatrics for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, has published the second edition of "Textbook of Global Child Health."

The 1,050-page book, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, was released Oct. 23 at the academy's national conference in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Kamat co-edited the book with Philip Fischer, M.D., F.A.A.P., professor of Pediatrics for the Mayo Clinic.

A large multinational team of authors collaborated to produce this second edition, which focuses on three key areas: foundational understanding of societal factors related to health and disease, appropriate care of children traveling internationally and clinical management of children in resource-limited areas. The book includes new chapters on cardiology, neurologic disorders, nephrology, emergency medicine and critical care, and hematology and oncology.

"Even with great strides in the battle worldwide against several childhood diseases, the fact is that children across the globe continue to struggle with life-threatening illnesses, with more than 7 million preschool-aged children dying every year," Dr. Kamat said. "To be effective globally, pediatric health care providers must gain knowledge and skills necessary to serve across cultural and national boundaries. This new second edition is designed to help meet this need by understanding principles of global child health, caring for pediatric travelers and immigrants, and practicing pediatrics in resource-limited countries."
