Dr. Robert Mack, professor and administrator, dies at age 91

Robert E. Mack, M.D., a longtime professor and administrator for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, died Sept. 16. He was 91.

Dr. Mack joined the faculty of the School of Medicine as an associate professor of Internal Medicine in 1961. He was promoted to the rank of professor in 1967. He also served the School of Medicine as director of Admissions (1978 to 1981), and assistant and then associate dean of Medical Center Relations (1980 to 1995). Among his duties was administrative responsibility for the Wayne State University/ Detroit Medical Center Graduate Medical Education Program.

He also served as chief of Medicine at Hutzel Woman's Hospital, and then chief executive officer and director of Hutzel Hospital in 1966. He was appointed president of Hutzel in 1970.  Dr. Mack joined the staff of the Detroit Medical Center in 1980 as vice president and served until his retirement in 1995. He served on the Wayne State University School of Medicine Admissions Committee from 1996 to 2009.

A leader in thyroid disease management, he was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He held memberships in a number of professional and academic societies, and served as president of the Society of Medical Administrators, the Detroit Academy of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Club.

Family members said Dr. Mack had a propensity to serve and to lead, participating in many community and professional organizations, serving in leadership roles in many. A devout Roman Catholic, he was a member of the Cardinal Club in Detroit and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a Catholic organization intended to strengthen the practice of Christian life and the importance of charity in and for the Church.

Dr.  Mack served at local, state and national levels to help shape and manage graduate medical education and health policy.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, Robert E. Mack Jr. (Leslie), Terrence Mack (Pamela), John Mack (Rebecca) and David Mack; daughter, Anne Mack Creamer (Robert), four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends Sept. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Hugo of the Hills Church, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills. Visitation at the church begins at 10 a.m.
