Kevin Grady, M.D., Class of 1981, was named Physician of the Year by the St. John Hospital Guild this month. He is chief medical officer and director of Pulmonary-Critical Care Services at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.
The award is given by the Guild's Board of Directors to a current or retired member of the hospital's medical staff who has demonstrated significant achievement or advancement of the medical profession and has provided outstanding service to the community.
He was presented with the award at the Guild's annual fundraiser, held June 3 in Sterling Heights, Mich.
"It was a great honor to be recognized as the physician of the year. I love being a Pulmonary-Intensivist today as much as I did 29 years ago, and the award was just frosting on the cake," Dr. Grady said. "The Wayne State University School of Medicine taught me to be the physician I am today and my parents taught me to be kind. These two attributes likely led to my receiving this humbling award."
He is an associate clinical professor for the School of Medicine.
Two of Dr. Grady's three children also have strong ties to his medical alma mater - middle child Kimberley Grady, M.D., is a Class of 2014 graduate and a first-year resident at the University of Michigan. His son Michael Grady will start his fourth year at the School of Medicine this fall.
Dr. Grady settled in Michigan midway through high school after living in several states and Iceland. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at William Beaumont Hospital and a Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1986. He returned to Michigan after the fellowship and has since practiced at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. He is a senior member and partner with Pulmonary & Critical Care Associates, and has held multiple positions within St. John Providence, including a nine-year term as a member of the St. John Providence Health System Board, medical staff president, chair of the Care Design Committee and chair of the Therapeutic Clinical Subcommittee for Ascension Health.
