Fellows capture firsts and seconds at ACOG Research Day

A number of Wayne State University Obstetric and Gynecological Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellows captured awards at the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists 30th annual Michigan Section Junior Fellow Research Day.

The May 20-21 event took place at the James B. Henry Conference Center in East Lansing, Mich. Residents and fellows from nine institutions around the state gave 30 oral presentations and displayed 29 posters during the daylong event sponsored by the Michigan Section.

Sana Khan, M.D., received the first prize for fellow presentation for her oral presentation, titled "Reactive Nitrogen Species Deteriorate Oocyte Quality through Disassembly of the Microtubule Organizing Center."

Mili Thakur, M.D., received the second prize for fellow presentation for her oral presentation, titled "Galactose and its metabolites disrupt spindle structure in metaphase II mouse oocytes." Dr. Thakur also received third prize for fellow presentation for her oral presentation, titled "Intensive Care Admissions in Pregnancy: Analysis of a Level of Support Scoring System." Dr. Thakur is a member of the combined Reproductive Endocrinology Infertility/Medical Genetics Fellowship Program, the only accredited combined REI-Medical Genetics program in the country.

Aliye Runyan, M.D., took second place for her oral presentation, "Diagnosis and Management of Hereditary Leiomyoma and Renal Cell Cancer (HLRCC)-Associated Uterine Leiomyomas."

In addition, two obstetrics and gynecology residents were recognized at the 13th annual Research Day at Sinai Grace Hospital.

Layan Alrahmani, M.D., captured first place for her oral presentation, "Adolescence and Risk of Preterm Birth in Multi-fetal Gestations."

Helen Jaramillo, M.D., took first place with her poster presentation of "Magnesium Sulfate Neuroprotection and Body Mass Index: A Secondary Analysis of a Multi-Center Randomized Control Trial."
