Construction project adds 52 new study spaces to Shiffman Medical Library

Students, faculty and staff at the Wayne State University School of Medicine celebrated the revamped and expanded study area in the Shiffman Medical Library with a ribbon cutting Feb. 14.

The library is located in the Richard J. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons.

The project added 52 study spaces to the library, satisfying student requests for more places to work.

"Students are always searching for space to study. With the library's desire to remove the shelving, it was a serendipitous opportunity to do both," said the Office of Medical Education's Ron Spalding, chief administrative officer. "Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive. We know they like it as the spaces are full almost every day with students studying in them."

The renovation included removing compact shelving units on the east side of the Shiffman quiet area. Books were removed in the fall, and construction started in December 2013, during the school's holiday break.
