Jia Yin, M.D., Ph.D., an ophthalmology resident at the Kresge Eye Institute, recently won a grand rounds competition hosted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
The annual online competition was open to all ophthalmology residents nationwide. The academy announced two winners and published the results on the Ophthalmic News & Education Network and Academy Express.
Dr. Yin, whose advisor is Professor Gary Abrams, M.D., presented a case of tubercular serpiginous-like choroiditis, an inflammatory eye condition.
The patient is an immigrant from Bangladesh with a recent decrease in vision and visual field loss. Based on his presentation, medical history and laboratory testing, including a QuantiFERON Gold test for tuberculosis, Dr. Yin said, the patient was diagnosed with tuberculosis-related serpiginous-like choroiditis. In collaboration with Patricia Brown, M.D., professor of infectious diseases, and Dana Kissner, M.D., associate professor of medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, the patient began tuberculosis treatment and his vision improved significantly.
"Tuberculosis-related ocular conditions are unusual in developed countries," Dr. Yin said. "With an increase in immigrants from developing countries and the subsequent rise in TB prevalence in the metropolitan Detroit area, however, we have seen and treated more TB-related eye diseases at Kresge Eye Institute. This case also showcased prompt and strong inter-departmental collaboration and quality of care."
