Annual Medical Student Research Symposium honors excellence in basic science, clinical categories

Wayne State University School of Medicine students showcased their research with 57 poster and oral presentations at the 2014 Medical Student Research Symposium, held Jan. 9-10 in Scott Hall.

The annual event gives students an opportunity to discuss and deliberate research and accompanying results with fellow students and faculty. The symposium was organized by Professor of Physiology Noreen Rossi, M.D., and Associate Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology Dennis Goebel Sr., Ph.D., who also coordinate the Summer Medical Student Research Fellowship Program.

"Despite the inclement weather and its toll on Scott Hall's and the Medical Commons plumbing, the event turned out to be one of the most memorable and successful symposiums in recent years. I first want to thank all of the volunteer judges for their expertise, time and encouragement, for without their efforts, this program would not be possible," Dr. Goebel said. "Lastly, I would like to thank Vice Dean of Education Maryjean Schenk, M.D., M.P.H., for her strong support in promoting medical student research here in the School of Medicine and for securing the funding for both the Research Symposium and the Summer Medical Student Research Fellowship Program for this, and future years."

All WSU medical students were eligible to submit abstracts on a research project to which they made a significant contribution. Dr. Schenk announced the awards for four sessions and the overall 2013 award at the conclusion of the oral presentations Jan. 10.
