The Florida Society of Ophthalmology recently announced that William Mallon, M.D., is the recipient of the John R. Brayton, Jr., M.D., Leadership Award.
Dr. Mallon, a 1994 graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, received the award at the FSO's annual meeting, Masters in Ophthalmology, June 28-30.
Established in honor of John R. Brayton, M.D., the annual award recognizes a Florida-based ophthalmologist who exemplifies leadership and dedication to the profession.
Dr. Mallon served as president of the FSO from 2011 to 2012. He is now membership chairman. During his term as president, he was instrumental in defeating legislation that threatened to harm Florida's patients, according to the FSO. His leadership during the 2012 legislative session helped lay the foundation that was built upon this year that ultimately led to the enactment of necessary patient safeguards into law.
Since 2003, Dr. Mallon has practiced at the Center for Advanced Eye Care in Vero Beach, Fla.
After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Mallon completed an internship at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Tennessee. He also completed a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at Ophthalmic Plastic Surgical Associates in Memphis. He earned his board certification from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2000.
