SOM counselor wins Distinguished Service Award

Leah Robinson, an academic counselor in the Office of Academic and Student Programs at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, has received the Academic Staff Professional Development Committee Distinguished Service Award for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Robinson, of Detroit, joined the WSU School of Medicine as a counselor II in 2006. She was promoted to counselor III in 2012.

"Having your hard work recognized as service to students and community affirms and validates my efforts and keeps me focused on my life's purpose and passion," Robinson said of the award.

The university's Academic Staff Professional Development Program Committee each year recognizes a member of the academic staff for accomplishments in the areas of service to students, the university and community. Academic staff, faculty, students, and administrators may make nominations.

As a counselor, Robinson coordinates and implements academic support services at the School of Medicine for students on an individual and small-group basis. She hires, trains and supervises student tutors, and analyzes, develops and maintains improvement strategies for students. She also works with faculty to coordinate academic reviews and preparation for required examinations for the United States Medical Licensing Examination parts 1 & 2.

"What I like most about my position is working with students," she said. "We would not be here if it weren't for students. My mission is simple: model and instill the desire for lifelong learning so that students can function in an ever-changing society."

Robinson will receive the award at a reception scheduled for noon April 26 at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center.
