Three groups of Wayne State University School of Medicine freshmen students are overseas during their winter break, providing basic medical care for hundreds of the medically underserved in Haiti, Peru and Panama.

The students, all members of the Class of 2016, will return to the United States on March 3.

This is the second time medical students have blogged from trips overseas. Two Class of 2015 students blogged about their experiences in Nicaragua and Haiti last December.

All groups travel with at least two physicians and two senior medical students. Students and support staff travel with supplies and medications. Each trip is funded by individual student fundraising and donations from friends, family, hospitals, local businesses, corporations and the Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Association.

"Each trip not only raises money to bring down all the medications, vitamins and supplies needed for the clinics they will set up; but they are also responsible for completing a sustainability project. These projects are chosen in working with the local community," said WHSO President and Class of 2015 medical student Cletus Stanton.

A group of second-year students will travel to Ecuador in March. Each year, the student organization takes six trips abroad and provides medical care for more than 2,000 patients.
