Aesculapians Honor Society community clean-up day is Oct. 6 in Detroit

The Wayne State University School of Medicine's Aesculapians Honor Society will continue its community project traditions with Aesculapians Day 2012, set for Saturday, Oct. 6 in association with the Grand River Creative Corridor.

The non-profit GRCC is an art corridor and neighborhood revitalization project concentrated on Grand River Avenue between Rosa Parks Boulevard and Warren Avenue in Detroit. It was launched in July and features more than 50 murals on 15 buildings, an outdoor art gallery at a bus stop and free-standing art installations. The GRCC project involves more than 45 volunteer artists from Michigan, Ohio, California, Germany, France and New Zealand, and is an ongoing effort to transform Detroit's Grand River Avenue into a creative hub that will attract tourists, artists, small businesses, entrepreneurs and investors.

The Aesculapians Honor Society is a 50-member School of Medicine student organization devoted to giving back to the City of Detroit and its charities through a variety of community programs and medical school activities. Past work includes service projects and fundraising for The Do Foundation, The Greening of Detroit and Gleaners Community Food Bank.

Volunteers are needed to help with trash pickup, sidewalk weed clearing, lot clearing, tree trimming, sweeping, grass cutting and painting on the corridor. Work will be done in two shifts, with the first shift from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the second shift from 2 to 5 p.m. A lunch break will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Those interested in volunteering are welcome to come for the entire day or a single shift. Volunteers should bring any equipment they have to help with clean up, including work gloves and lawn equipment.
