Associate Professor Leonard Piggott, M.D., dies at 80

Leonard Piggott, M.D., a clinical associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, died Nov. 26. He was 80.

Dr. Piggott, who joined the School of Medicine in 1976, graduated from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in 1956. He served an internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids and trained in adult and child psychiatry at the Lafayette Clinic in Detroit.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult and Child Psychiatry, he served at the Lafayette Clinic as head of Adolescent Service from 1974 to 1977, director of Child Training and Research from 1977 to 1983 and acting director of Child and Adolescent Service from 1978 to 1983. He was the assistant director of Children's Services at Havenwyck Hospital in Auburn Hills from 1985 to 1995, staff psychiatrist at Fairlawn Center from 1995 to 1997, staff psychiatrist at the Hawthorn Center from 1997 to 2003 and a consultant at the Hawthorn Center from 2003 until his death.

At the WSU School of Medicine, Dr. Piggott supervised residents clinically and academically, taught numerous courses and published in the field.

"Lenny was a very nice man; very quiet, unassuming," said Richard Balon, M.D., professor of WSU Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences. "He was beloved by residents and staff and respected by his peers. He was really a very, very nice guy."

He is survived by his wife, June; sons Randy and Kevin (a graduate of the WSU School of Medicine); and daughter, Cheryl.

Visitation is Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road, Livonia. Funeral services will take place Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
