Employees of the School of Medicine and visitors to the campus can go home with fresh produce, honey and breads grown and crafted in the city of Detroit thanks to the Wayne State University Farmers Market.
The market will set up July 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the mall between Scott Hall and Detroit Receiving Hospital. Fifteen-minute metered customer parking will be available in the area off Canfield, between Scott Hall and the Lande Building.
The market will be open the third Thursday of each month through October. Participating famers and vendors offer an array of fresh, locally grown produce, flowers and baked goods. With this market, Midtown-area employees and residents have another option to purchase healthy and farm-fresh foods, and local farmers have additional opportunities to market their produce.
The market will accept cash and the Michigan Bridge Card, a debit card on which federal food stamp dollars are deposited so that participating low-income households can purchase food. The food stamp program -- now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- is offered at the market in partnership with Detroit's Eastern Market Corp. Project Fresh and Senior Project Fresh coupons will also be accepted.
